Check for a discrete GPU first

Some Ryzen laptops include a discrete AMD GPU alongside the Vega 8 APU. Open Device Manager → Display adapters. If you see two entries, you have dedicated graphics.

Optimization steps

7. Keep the laptop on a hard surface. Ryzen APUs run hot under sustained load, and the Vega 8's clock speeds depend on the CPU staying below its thermal limit. Blocking the vents with a soft surface causes throttling mid-game.

Vega 8 vs Vega 7 and Vega 6

AMD Ryzen processors ship with different Vega variants depending on the specific chip. The Ryzen 5 4500U has Vega 6 (6 compute units). The Ryzen 5 5500U has Vega 7 (7 CUs).
